Solid State Drives (SSD)

I have decent laptop.  A Core i3, Windows 7, 4GB of RAM.  I recently took the plunge and replaced the traditional hard drive with a Solid State Drive (SSD).  If you know anything about the history of computers, you know that hard drive technology hasn't really changed all that much.  They still have spindles and platters and read/write heads that operate with even less tolerance than they originally did yet store vast amounts of data.  They are mechanical and that alone is the single most degrading performance hit for today's computers.  SSD's are more like an extension of RAM so there is a tremendous increase in performance.  So, I bought one and loaded up Windows 7 on it.  Windows 7 boots in 35 seconds!  Quickbooks opens in just 7 seconds!  Don't blink when opening folders or you'll not see the folder open!  Even web browsing is much faster.  If you want to improve performance of your laptop, give Geeks On Call a ring at 1-800-905-GEEK for a consultation.

How I Got My First Android Tablet

The ASUS Transformer Prime arrived late in 2011 and really caught my eye and has become so popular that getting one takes some careful and frequent surfing. I tweeted about this site in the past, http://www.nowinstock.net/ that let's you track specific hardware inventory across the web in near real time. I was excited when I found this website. Later that evening, it happened. I got an alert that one was in stock somewhere. I got the alert at 6:24PM and had my online order placed at 6:27PM - Yeah!. I was excited when I got the confirmation email - I finally got myself a Prime! The next morning, I was checking my email account I use exclusively for online ordering, and found out that the vendor I had ordered the Prime from was out of stock. Within 3 minutes! So, I tried again and again until 3 weeks later I finally got, not one, but two! OK, now I need a case to protect it from mobile abuse. Transformer Prime as laptop

I am often asked about my opinion on the iPad. I bought the iPad when it first came out and have wore it out. But, it does have its shortfalls by not opening web pages that use Adobe Flash Player or it fails miserably when trying to use it offline and sync with the cloud. I love the iOS interface though. I bought an iphone early on too, but had to return it because I couldn't type a text or even a short email on the thing. So, I used my trusty Blackberry Curve for several years and wore my thumb out rolling the little ball around. Then Windows Mobile sort of came - and went. I used a big brick phone, the Samsung i730 slider with a touchscreen and a stylus. Then, along comes Android. My first Android phone was the Droid2 from Motorola and this device really was the start of a transformation for me. For the first time, I had a phone with a touchscreen and a very nice keyboard. I kept my Droid2 until the Droid4 came out offering the same type of phone along with a larger screen and 4G. I was moving up now! It was then that I began looking for an Android Tablet since, until recently, they really couldn't come close to competing with the iPad. The iPad was also presenting me and a client with some real challenges. So, I bought the ASUS Transformer Prime. Up next, my thoughts on the ASUS Transformer Prime.
